Music program of the 2017 United Islands of Prague
As it has already been said at the opening press conference of this year’s United Islands of Prague: The present meets with a history this year. The festival has not only connected its program with the Karlin city district´s anniversary and has chosen new places for musical performances as well as for another program, but it also returns to its roots. “After fourteen years, it is a big change, but we will again welcome foreign artists who belong among the top rising talents and you will again have the opportunity to discover young musicians with a great potential,” says Barbora Šubrtová, the Head of Program of the festival.
“The merger of Karlin celebrating exactly 200 years since its inception on June 23rd, 2017, with this year´s United Islands taking place on the Rohan Island, is almost symbolic,” adds Marie Foltýnová of the Karlin 200 Association, which initiated the celebrations.
It has been clear from the very beginning that the Friday’s celebration must feature Ivan Hlas Trio whose song immediately jumps to one´s mind when pronouncing the title of Karlin. The numerous group of The Tap Tap, a musical synonym for overcoming barriers we set by ourselves, will perform along. This year´s program also includes pop and jazz, world music and rock, folk and electronics.
“On Saturday, all 6 musical stages will resound. Let me give you a few tips for performers you should not miss. Thom Artway has recently received two Czech Musical Awards and let me say, he truly deserves it; we believe Thom is one of the greatest domestic talents. Other distinctive singers certainly include Fil Bo Riva or the young TAMIR, who both will captivate you with their vocal funds. On the contrary, the fragile Next Ex will take you to the countryside of dreamy indie electronics. Let yourselves draw in the whirl of the Balkan temperament with the Serbian Marcelo or the Portuguese Throes and Shine, who will conclude this year´s program on the Rohan Island. In the evening, the Karlin Square will be under the baton of the Orff Brothers who will perform at the United Islands after long 9 years!”
For anyone who likes to discover new talents, it is definitely advisable not to avoid musical discoveries on the Radio Wave stage, including a young singer and producer Zagami Jericho, or to go to the open-air Open Mike stage for beginning performers. And, of course, visitors should neither miss the rich non-musical program.
“During preparations for the Karlin´s anniversary celebrations, we strived to respectfully cooperate with the Islands, not to close Karlin just for local festivities and also not to swallow up the upcoming events with local significance by the music festival,” explains Marie Foltýnová. “We believe that both locals and visitors from all over Prague will enjoy the Karlin´s 200th anniversary. This year is the first of the travelling stops of the United Islands, and Karlin and its birthday are sure to be a great start.”
